July 4th New Moon

- a note from the desktop of Jon C. Haass

Today is a U.S. centric holiday, the 4th of July, a celebration of the Independence from England. Fireworks, parades and barbecues are enjoyed across the country. And this year it is a 4 day weekend for many.

Who doesn’t like fireworks? Perhaps some small children and pets are frightened, and firefighters in the dry country like California, or people for whom the explosions bring up memories of more threatening types of bomb.

Being born on the fourth gives me a slightly skewed perspective, I admit. We always seemed to have some dramatic event occur on that day in addition to fireworks. And yet I still say ooh and ahhh as the colors light up the dark sky.

This year offers another opportunity to practice personal independence. This spirit of personal freedom, so valuable it can be overlooked, is our freedom to choose the direction of life, of our mind, of our dreams.

How will you practice your freedom and independence today, this next week and for the rest of your days?

I am choosing to jump in with both feet and a big Yes. And an ooh and ahh for the fireworks as well as the quieter daily miracles.

Declare Your Independence!

I'm extremely excited to share some cool news: I've been published in the LA Times blog. That's right. About 6 months ago, sick of the direction the country had been going for some time, I conceived of editing the Declaration of Independence and waiting until this 4th to see if newspapers would pick it up.

Here's what I wrote to the Editors:

Dear Editor,

On the eve of July 4th, I am struck by the parallels between the original Declaration of Independence with its charges of abuse by then King George and the continued fraud and abuse perpetrated by George Bush and His Adminsitration.

Attached is an edited version of the Declaration of Independence for our time to help put this Administrations actions in perspective along with some background links.

The LA Times like it. And so it is. Check this out!
